That was my thought too. Recordings are one thing. But monitored is another. 🧐. Would be good if someone could comment who has this in their establishment to clear this up.

They are monitored / recorded just like the pin phones on the landings.
The prisoner cannot just dial any old number. They put a pin in, dial the number and if that number is not on there personal approved pre checked numbers I will not connect

It will be no different then really except it could reduce the amount of illegal phones and stop arguments in the phone queues. This is how I’m picturing it anyway. I’m also assuming they’ll be only given to prisoners who aren’t misbehaving? What is the concern with the cords and ability to her oneself or others with it?

The question still stands how do you monitor 100s of phone calls? Recording is not monitoring thats just a tick box exercise and is reactive rather than proactive. Calling a pre approved number doesnt stop them talking to people they shouldn't, call transfer and forwarding ect. Failing that the old tried and tested "mate" sat on your mum's sofa waiting for the call.

My mum butt dials a lot. She has an iPhone 🤷🏽♀️ If it was her waiting the call it could be a plausible defence 😬.
But yes mccudden. The ins and outs of the monitoring and it’s logistics would be interesting.
My thoughts are that only well behaved prisoners with no gang links would get such privileges.

I could answer the question but it would be a security breach on the inner workings of what we do to combat this problem.

Its open source information but you are right lets not make it easy. Just like with anything to do with the government, its a good idea but lacks the resources to make it viable.

My establishment has this in place. There's a few pads without the phones for the more destructive fellas.
It does seem to have chilled them out a bit, although there's now alot more call monitoring!

What if they have a bad phone call one evening? Nan died, mums in hospital or whatever.... as prison officers we would notice the change in attitude and behaviour of the prisoner and monitor them deal with it adequately open ACCTS if we have too.
If that call happens when there behind their door some of them are more at risk, especially the ones that think talking about their problems is weak minded and for pussies.
Hopefully the recorded phonecalls arent backlogged for 2-3 days or we might see some deaths from this

All calls are recorded and kept for longer than a few days.
Calls are monitored randomly most of the time unless there is Intel to monitor specific prisoners.
There are risks associated with phones in cells which have been highlighted but there are also positives as well.
It stops to a certain degree fights on the landings and prisoners getting in your face at bang up because they want to speak to their family past that time. Also, if they're having a bad time they can phone a family member and speak to them about it. That in tern can lead to a family member calling the establishment and expressing their concerns which we may never know about as officers.
It's very much swings and roundabouts
