If you have pre existing health concerns meaning you cannot work with sex offenders, you should not be a prison officer full stop. Just because you don’t want to work with a certain type of person means everyone else has to pick up the slack.
Because I love working with people that cut them selves daily, that do dirty protests and everything else that EVERY prisoner is capability of doing blah blah blah.
More pink and fluffy.
Fuckin bullshit, I’ve just read the article again and had to edit my post I am that fuming.
Shame on that officer, if you can’t handle ALL aspects of the job, show yourself the door and let someone who can take your place. Simple solution to this, don’t ask what they’re in for and don’t read their profile. That way you don’t know if they’re a sex offender.
Nah fuck that, just go sign on and stop wasting everyone’s time and money cashing a wage you don’t deserve.
This is a soldier saying...I don’t want to fight. A chef saying I’ll work In your kitchen but I’m not going to cook meat, I’m sure there is loads.

With SOAD on this one, at my familiarisation we were told that though we applied to Cat B we would all be offered Cat C which is purely sex offenders. 5 said they weren't happy and wanted the Cat B instead, thought I'd pipe up and mention that the Cat B also housed sex offenders. Their faces were a treat. The SO there basically told them that if them weren't happy there are several locked doors around that could be unlocked for those people to jog on and stop wasting time! Please please if any one isn't happy and is currently in Vetting, hit the withdraw application button to speed it up for those who just want to get on and do the job. Rant over!

Looks like it was handled badly by the Prison HR though and not particularly surprising they lost the case. I agree that she should have to work anywhere in the prison. However, there are occasions when exceptions can be made and times when they will benefit the organization. On the surface, she appears to have been an experienced Prison Officer and appears to have had an existing agreement not to work with sex offenders. The prison then reneged on this agreement. She then said she’d be happy to be demoted and that was refused despite there being vacancies at the OSG level. Seems odd that they’re treating people like this at a time of such staff shortages in the Prison Service.

I see no benefit to an individual letting the “team” down due their own inability. If you can’t work with a specific group of people inside a prison then I’m affraid you should hand in your keys.
Sex offenders (VP’s) often hide on the general population wings, the only way you would know they are VP’s is if you look at their crimes. Fair enough she offered to take a demotion to an OSG, but these duties are reserved for officers who have injuries, or genuine medical reasons to be unable to work the landings and other OSG’s who have applied and go through training to conduct this role. Not because they don’t like working with prisoners.
For what ever the reason is for her not wanting to work with VP’s, what if I didn’t want to work with burglars because my house has been targeted and I have anxiety over it. I don’t want to work with murders because I have anxiety about working with people who have the ability to take a life and it makes me feel uncomfortable.
If you can’t pull your weight in this profession, show yourself the door and free up that place for someone who will. Maybe there is more to this story than what is read here, but based on on the facts described in this story it’s bullshit.
Having staff shortages is not a reason to retain or recruit people who cannot fulfill the job role fully, that makes prisons unsafe in itself.

At the end of the day my view is the same as the majority here. She applied to work in a prison and it goes without saying they’re are probably going to be people that make your skin crawl in there. Just get on with it or get another job.

On the odd occasion I have to work on a Vp wing for an afternoon I don't like it but I get on with it. At the end of the day as an Officer you will work with some people who have committed horrific crimes it goes with the territory. This isn't a job for everyone and if there are certain types of prisoners you can't work with then the job isn't for you. I get through my day by meditating on this quote "Him that is without sin let him cast the first stone" That is how I'm able to do my job.

Whilst i tend to agree with the masses, there is not enough detail to effectively demonise her. She joined in 2002, but did not ask to stop working with sex offenders on the wing until 2013. So what happened? Was there a personal problem that happened outside, such as herself being a victim of a sex attack? The comp seems to be for unfair dismissal and if she was willing to demote herself and there were similar jobs open then why not let her?
Truth is, we don't know the why or what of the situation, and we never will unless she decides to speak.
Just my 2 cents.
