I'm under no illusion of the dangers of the job. I have two PO friends who opened my eyes before I even considered applying.
The point I was trying to make was that 1 in 3 leaving within the first 2 years is not that extraordinary compared to other large companies considering the speed and size of the recruitment campaign.

I didnt see that, I seen someone who has give it a go and found out its not for them. Nothing wrong with that, the important thing is she stepped up and give it a try.
No one knows how they will react in that environment until they are actually in it.

I don't get why she hadn't worked on any of the wings yet? Wonder if she's paid the same too...

She mentioned the reason why, she said she is not confident enough. The way I look at would you want someone with such a demure and lack of confidence on the wing with you? She's probably doing jobs others dont want to do, and at the same time her colleagues are happy because they dont have a liability working on the wings with them.
Given time she may come out of her shell, and progress to the wings.

I too would be surprised if she lasts but regardless of what happens, fair play to her for having the bottle to try it. I work with a few people who are too comfortable in there environment and just happy doing a routine job. They wouldn't ever test there self outside there comfort zone and that in itself is a testament to the type of person. I hope she goes on to have a long career in the prison service and like Mccuden says, she is still doing a job. (Probably one that alot of other officers find tedious and boring) A future as a OSG probably will be better suited for her. (I have been a OSG myself)

being comfortable in a position id say is more dangerous than lacking confidence (to a degree).

being comfortable in a position id say is more dangerous than lacking confidence (to a degree). Oh yes. There always has to be a happy medium.

Comfort breeds complacency.

Hmm, my opinion is why is she even there? If after completing poelt she isnt confident enough to be on the wings then why be there? Would a bloke get treated the same being molly cuddled and put on reception or whatever - equality and all that. To coast along doing easy jobs while others deal with the shit and getting paid the same.

POELT teaches the basics, as with any job you learn the trade doing it. Shes only 7 months in, and lacking confidence. I suspect the jobs not for her, operhaps she needed a bit of encouragement and support at the beginning. We dont know the full story just a glimpse, she may have been put in the area she is now and forgot about, thus no enabling her to build upon the basic skills POELT gave her.

At the end of the day, the lassie is a prison officer so fair play to her. It hasn’t given enough information or specific details on any of those included in the show to make judgement IMO. There are other roles in prisons where people don’t work the landings, PTI, Education etc.

People develop at different speeds as well. There’s no point in binning her off immediately. It would make sense to see where she’s at, at the end of her probation. If she’s still not competent after a year, she probably never will be.
